A very sad occasion

by Art Speck on 18/02/2008

A guy does not expect to have to mourn the loss of his son-in-law, that just isn’t the way the system should work.

However, I’ve just returned from such a task, and very sad it was too.

Nick was just 54 years old, and as well as leaving my daughter Lynn behind, his four children, my grandchildren, have a terrible void in their lives that nobody else can fill.

Nick was one of the best, a good husband, father, and son-in-law.

He was one of 11 children, and almost the youngest, so it was very sad for his siblings to come to his funeral from all parts of the world to pay their last respects.

My wife Laura and I have always recognised Nick as one of the best, but do you know, despite telling everyone else how much we appreciated him and the role he played in my daughter’s life, I cannot recall ever telling Nick this.

So I urge you now, if you have a son-in-law or daughter-in-law who are as special as Nick was to us, tell them now to their face. Tomorrow may be too late.

There is no better time than right now to be happy.

Happiness is a journey, not a destination.

So work like you don’t need money.

Love like you’ve never been hurt, and,

Dance like no one’s watching.

Don’t be afraid that your life will end,

Be afraid that it will never begin.

That was very touching. Most of us fail to appreciate people and do it only at their funerals.A lesson learnt.
